Rise of Opioid Misuse Parallels Increase in Cases of Hepatitis C

Andrea Chisholm, MD, an OB/GYN physician at CHA and a clinical instructor of obstetrics and gynecology at Harvard Medical School, discussed the link between the misuse of opioids and the rise of hepatitis C among U.S. adults under 40 with Harvard Health Publications. She also calls attention to the fact that cases of hepatitis C, among childbearing-aged women, have essentially doubled over the last 10 years. A pregnant woman can pass the hepatitis C virus to her baby. It is not clear at what point in pregnancy hepatitis C transmission occurs, but there is some evidence to suggest it is more likely to occur close to the onset of labor or actually during delivery.
