X-rays are a form of energy that can pass through the body. A modern x-ray machine uses this energy to create an image on a computer screen, letting doctors look inside nearly every part of the body, including the bones, muscles, chest and digestive system.

Today, getting an x-ray is safer than ever. At CHA, we use the latest, all-digital x-ray technology, which uses the lowest possible amount of radiation. Studies have shown that the benefits of x-ray greatly outweigh the risks of radiation exposure, even when you have many exams.

X-ray Exams at Their Best

You won’t have to do anything special to prepare for most x-ray exams. If you are having an exam using a contrast agent, you may need to change the way you eat or drink the day before or the day of the test. Your doctor will tell you what to do.

During the test, you’ll be asked to stand, sit or lie near an x-ray generator and a recording plate. The technologist will help position you for the best view of the body. You'll need to stay still and hold your breath at the moment each x-ray is taken (the technologist will let you know what to do). The exam can take anywhere from a few minutes to an hour. One of our expert radiologists will examine your x-rays and share the information with your doctor.
